Water Well Drilling
Water Well Drilling Rig

Over half of the world’s population depends on ground water. The search for ground water has evolved over centuries from dug wells to a less labor intensive Mud Rotary drilling method. Mud Rotary is the most common way of searching for water in the twenty first century. Mud Rotary drilling combines water and bentonite drilling gel into slurry more commonly called MUD which is circulated down a drill rod to the bottom and out the drill bit. The bit is spinning at speeds upwards of 200rpms and is being lowered by the Top Head or Kelly of the drill rig.

As the bit penetrates the soil, it creates smaller fragmented pieces that are called drill cuttings. The MUD carries these cuttings to the surface to create an open hole from the top to the bottom. The drill cuttings are collected into a mud pan, also referred to as a settling pit, on the surface and then the MUD is re-circulated to continue the drilling process. It is necessary to remove these cuttings as fast as possible so that they do not get re-circulated down the hole. The optimum goal is to remove all the undesirable drill solids and send just bentonite gel and water to continue carrying new cuttings up and out of the hole.

Although Mud Rotary has advanced our ability to drill faster and farther than we could dig a well before, somehow modern man is still left shoveling drill cuttings from a pit or mud pan. The Mud Puppy is designed to get that shovel out of your hand and remove the drill cuttings mechanically and to also keep a good clean drill mud. Dirty drill mud will be highly abrasive and cause major damage to mud pumps, top heads, and any other working parts that the dirty mud comes into contact with. Shoveling a pit will not remove all of these abrasive cuttings, only a Solids Control Unit like a Mud Puppy can remove the majority of these undesired cuttings.

Along with damaging your rig and pumps, dirty mud will cause poor borehole stability. If the borehole is destabilized it can cave in and all of the drill rods can get stuck or lost down the hole. The final reason you need a good clean mud is to ensure that your water well will produce as much water as possible. The same micro abrasive particles that cause damage on the rig and hole, will plug up the water bearing area of the well causing little to no water to come out. A MudPuppy can prevent unnecessary wear and tear on the Drill Rig and help provide the best drilling conditions to produce a good productive water well.
